Meghalaya Transport Department Imposes New Restrictions on Umiam Dam Bridge

Northeast Desk, 2nd August: The Meghalaya Transport Department has introduced stringent weight and size restrictions for vehicles crossing the Umiam Dam bridge, effective immediately.

According to the new regulations, only single-axle vehicles weighing less than 9 metric tonnes, including their load, will be permitted to use the bridge. Additionally, the height of vehicles must not exceed 2.8 meters.

Transport Commissioner Sanjay Goyal announced these changes in a notification issued on August 1. The new rules are aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of the bridge structure, which is a critical infrastructure asset for the region.

These restrictions have been implemented under the authority of Section 113 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1998, and Rule 95 of the Central Motor Rules 1989. The directive underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining essential transport routes while prioritizing public safety and infrastructure integrity.
