Manipur: DESAM Protests Reappointment of Superannuated Faculty at Central Agricultural University in Imphal

Northeast Desk, 5th August: The Democratic Students’ Alliance Manipur (DESAM) has voiced strong objections to the alleged reappointment of a retired faculty member at the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, claiming it violates the university’s rules and regulations.

During a press conference at DESAM’s Kwakeithel office, President Mayengbam Somorjit stated that the former dean of CAU, whose tenure ended on July 31, 2024, has been reappointed as the dean-in-charge of the College of Agriculture, Iroisemba, and director of Instruction at CAU, Imphal. Somorjit argued that this reappointment contravenes university policies, especially given the availability of other senior professors eligible for these roles.

“The reappointment of a superannuated faculty member to administrative positions is a clear violation of the university’s established policies,” Somorjit remarked. DESAM emphasized that while re-engaging retired faculty in an academic capacity might be permissible, assigning them administrative roles such as dean, director, or head of department is unacceptable under the university’s regulations.

DESAM has submitted a memorandum to the Union Minister, seeking immediate action to revoke the reappointment order. The students’ organization has issued a five-day ultimatum to the university administration to address their demands, warning of various forms of agitation if their demands are not met.

“We demand the immediate withdrawal of the reappointment order,” Somorjit declared, urging the university to adhere strictly to its regulations and avoid setting a precedent that undermines the institution’s integrity.
