Assam: Karbi Anglong DM Enforces Prohibitory Orders Amid Violent Protests
Guwahati, 7th August: In a bid to restore peace and order, the District Magistrate (DM) of Karbi Anglong has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act. This decision follows escalating unrest in Diphu, the administrative center of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, where protests against the eviction of illegal settlers have erupted into violence.
The unrest intensified when demonstrators, spearheaded by the Karbi Students Association and other organizations, attempted to storm the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) headquarters. Their main demand is the immediate removal of unauthorized settlers from the Professional Grazing Reserved (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserved (VGR) lands. What started as a peaceful protest quickly turned chaotic, forcing the police to resort to blank firing and lathi charges to disperse the crowd.
The decision to invoke prohibitory orders comes after a day of significant disorder, with hundreds of protesters converging on the KAAC headquarters. The volatile situation in Diphu required stringent measures to prevent further escalation and to ensure the safety and security of local residents.
The Karbi Anglong DM highlighted the necessity of maintaining law and order as the key reason for the prohibitory orders, stressing the district administration’s dedication to upholding peace and stability amidst the ongoing tensions.
