Congress Lok Sabha Members Discuss Key Issues; Waqf Amendment Bill in Focus
Guwahati, 8th August: Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, announced that a meeting was held today with party members and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The discussions covered a range of topics, including the situation in Bangladesh, issues related to China, recent Supreme Court rulings, and the day’s parliamentary proceedings.
Gogoi described the meeting as constructive, with Gandhi urging members to address public concerns actively. He noted that there is opposition from various parties regarding the introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Congress will provide a detailed stance on the bill once it is formally discussed in the House.
In contrast, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism about the Waqf Amendment Bill, viewing it as a significant step toward justice for Muslim women. Although he has not yet reviewed the draft of the bill, Sarma stated that media reports indicate the bill is undergoing amendments aimed at addressing Muslim women’s rights and ensuring proper management of waqf properties.
Sarma remarked, “I have not seen the draft or amendment bill yet; I am aware of it only through media reports. If the amendment is indeed happening, it is a long-standing requirement that will provide justice to Muslim women and ensure waqf properties are properly allocated.”
