Gauhati High Court Orders Release of Bodies of Hmar Youths to Families
Guwahati, 8th August: Weeks after the death of three Hmar youths in Assam’s Cachar, the Gauhati High Court has directed the families to collect the bodies from the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) mortuary. The bodies have been held at the morgue since July 17.
The families had previously requested that the post-mortem be conducted outside Assam. However, the state government submitted the autopsy report from SMCH to the court. The court’s recent order allows the families to retrieve the bodies for final rites after the senior counsel for the petitioners confirmed that they had no objections to receiving the bodies.
The court’s order includes provisions for families who wish to transport the bodies out of Assam. They must notify the Superintendent of Police, Cachar, who will facilitate the logistics and provide support up to the nearest airport or border.
Additionally, the court has required the state to file an affidavit by August 30, 2024. The petitioners must file any rejoinders at least one day before the next hearing, scheduled for September 10.
