Assam CM Sarma Confident in Diplomatic Efforts to Address Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh
Guwahati, 9th August: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed confidence that the Indian government, through careful diplomatic measures, will effectively address the alleged attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Speaking on the matter, Sarma emphasized the importance of patience and diplomacy in handling the situation, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining strict vigilance along the fully sealed Indo-Bangladesh border.
Sarma highlighted that the solution lies not in allowing persecuted individuals to cross into India but in ensuring their safety and security within Bangladesh. He noted that the Indian government is working closely with international organizations, including the United Nations, to address the situation diplomatically.
While Sarma refrained from making direct comments on the alleged attacks to avoid potential repercussions for minorities in Bangladesh, he expressed his confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to protect the rights and safety of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists in the neighboring country.
The Chief Minister also assured that Assam is upholding strict border security measures, allowing entry only to those with valid passports, visas, and bona fide Indian citizenship. He voiced concerns over the potential influx of people through the border and the risk of Bangladesh becoming a haven for insurgents from Northeast India. However, Sarma expressed hope that the new government in Bangladesh would continue to cooperate in curbing extremist activities in the region, building on the successes achieved with the previous administration.
