Hailakandi, 9th August: A youth from Hailakandi, Assam, has been detained by local police following a controversial social media post that allegedly supported unrest in Bangladesh. Rezuwan Ulla Mazarbhuiya, a resident of Rangpur under Lala Police Station, was arrested after his Facebook post suggested that similar turmoil should spread to India, expressing that “Bangladesh’s impact will soon be witnessed in Assam.”
Mazarbhuiya’s post, written in Bengali, also included references to the militant organization Al-Qaeda in subsequent comments. The police are currently investigating potential terror connections.
In related news, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh has announced stringent measures to control the movement of individuals between Bangladesh and Assam. Singh stated that only Indian passport holders would be permitted to return from Bangladesh through designated entry points in Assam. During recent disturbances, 78 students, including 60 from Assam, were repatriated. Singh emphasized that Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) would prevent illegal entries and take legal action against violators.
Assam shares a 267.5 km border with Bangladesh, and Singh reassured that border security remains a top priority to manage the influx of returnees and maintain order.
