Centre Approves ₹2,000 Crore for Second Phase of Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project
Northeast Desk, 10th August: The Union Ministry of Finance has sanctioned ₹2,000 crore for the development of roads and logistics infrastructure under the Second Phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP). This initiative, also known as the Meghalaya Economic Growth Accelerator (MEGA) Corridor project, aims to enhance the state’s connectivity and boost economic growth.
The first phase of the MITP was implemented with a ₹880 crore support from the World Bank, focusing on key road networks across Meghalaya. The second phase will build on this foundation, targeting the development of over 300 km of double-lane roads that will connect critical regions such as Shillong, Tura, Jowai, and Dawki.
The MEGA Corridor project is set to oversee significant road projects, including the Baejendoba-Resubelpara-Mendipathar-Damra road, the Shillong-Diengpasoh stretch, and the Pasyih-Garampani route. Additionally, the project will focus on urban road infrastructure, linking the New Shillong Administrative City and New Shillong Knowledge City, as well as developing industrial parks, warehouses, agro-processing centers, and markets.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had earlier met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to propose the project and seek financial assistance. Expressing his gratitude, the Chief Minister announced the approval on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Grateful to Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman ji for sanctioning ₹2000 cr for taking up the MiTP (Phase 2) project with the World Bank. We will now take up all important roads and continue the good work of the MITP Phase 1.”
According to a statement from the Commissioner and Secretary of the Planning, Investment Promotion & Sustainable Development Department, this move aims to drive economic development in remote areas by providing seamless roads and infrastructure, transforming Meghalaya into a hub of regional growth.
