Meghalaya Chief Minister Meets Amit Shah Over Bangladesh Situation

Northeast Desk, 12th August: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, alongside Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the impact of the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh on India’s northeastern states. The meeting focused on addressing concerns from border residents and reinforcing border security measures.

In a statement on social media, Chief Minister Sangma revealed that Amit Shah reviewed the current situation and its potential implications for the Northeast. Sangma emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to safeguarding the borders and called for maintaining peace and harmony within the community.

“Hon’ble Home Minister Amit Shah ji today reviewed the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and its implications for the North East. The concerns and apprehensions of our people were raised during the meeting. Government of India is committed to keeping our borders safe and appeals to all to maintain peace and harmony,” Sangma wrote.

The discussions come in the wake of heightened tensions following the vandalism of a statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem, a prominent Khasi freedom fighter, at the Indian Cultural Centre in Dhaka. This incident has led to significant outrage in Meghalaya and prompted a temporary suspension of border trade activities.

Chief Minister Sangma also urged the interim government of Bangladesh to address the unrest and prevent further loss of life and property. “While the situation in Bangladesh is the internal affair of its people, we hope the caretaker government will take decisive action to restore order,” he said.

The Meghalaya government is maintaining close communication with Indian authorities to implement appropriate measures along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, ensuring the safety of residents and national security.
