BRO’s Project Swastik Celebrates India’s 78th Independence Day with Patriotic Fervor in Sikkim
Northeast, 15th August: Project Swastik of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) marked India’s 78th Independence Day with a series of patriotic ceremonies across Sikkim, demonstrating a strong commitment to national pride and border security. The celebrations were notably held at some of the highest and most strategically important locations in the region, highlighting the critical role of BRO in safeguarding and connecting these remote areas.
Flag hoisting ceremonies were conducted at Donkayala Pass and Tamze Pass, two of the highest passes in North and East Sikkim, as well as at Doklam and Nathula, which lie along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). A similar event took place at Point 4685, the highest peak in East Sikkim. These sites were carefully chosen to emphasize the BRO’s vital contributions to India’s border security and infrastructure development.
As part of the nationwide “Har Ghar Tiranga” initiative, a significant flag hoisting event was held at the newly inaugurated Indryani Bridge in Singtham. This critical infrastructure, recently opened by Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Kumar Tamang (Golay), is expected to greatly improve connectivity in the region, underscoring the BRO’s motto of “Connecting Places, Connecting People.”
The Independence Day celebrations extended beyond Sikkim, with Tiranga marches and runs organized in various prominent locations across North Bengal and Sikkim, including Chungthang, Chandmari, Burtuk, Kalimpong, Kupup, and Nathula. These events saw enthusiastic participation from local communities, including children, who joined in the celebrations with great fervor.
At the Swastik Toddler School, a special program was held for the children of BRO personnel. The day included patriotic plays, song competitions, and a dental check-up for the students, adding a focus on health and wellness to the celebrations.
Through Project Swastik, the BRO continues to play a vital role in the lives of border populations, not only by enhancing infrastructure and connectivity but also by fostering a spirit of patriotism and unity in some of India’s most remote and challenging terrains.
