Assam to Launch New Sub-Districts Starting October 2
Guwahati, August 16, 2024 — Assam is set to enhance local governance with the introduction of new Sub-districts across the state starting October 2. This initiative aims to decentralize administration, improve efficiency, and drive grassroots development by bringing governance closer to the people.
The new Sub-district offices will be operational and equipped to handle a range of administrative tasks. Guwahati will see the creation of four new sub-districts, with formation expected to be finalized by August. This move follows Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s earlier announcement, made in June 2024, that the state government intended to establish the sub-districts before August 15.
Sarma highlighted the progress in a recent statement, “Sub-districts will be announced in the state before August 15. Each sub-division will be upgraded to the sub-district level. In this regard, the work is going on.”
The Chief Minister also addressed the scheduling of by-elections, noting that they would occur later than in other states. The new administrative structure is expected to facilitate more effective local governance and accelerate regional development.
