Assam CM Criticizes Jharkhand Authorities Over Convict’s Escape and Alleged Mistreatment of Victim’s Family

Guwahati, August 17, 2024 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has publicly criticized the Jharkhand authorities following the escape of Mohammad Shahid Ansari, a convict serving a life sentence for gang rape. Ansari, who recently killed tribal police constable Chauhan Hembram, managed to escape from Hazaribag Medical College on August 11, sparking outrage and concern over the state’s handling of the situation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma expressed his frustration, pointing out that no officials from Jharkhand had contacted Hembram’s family since the tragic incident. He stated that he, along with BJP leader Babulal Marandi, was on his way to visit the family in Bishni Saran, Thana – Bengabad, District – Giridih, when troubling news surfaced.

Sarma reported that around 4:30 AM, Hembram’s wife and children were allegedly detained by the police, and their home was sealed—a move he described as “very strange.” He condemned the actions as a manifestation of “appeasement politics,” accusing Jharkhand’s political system of neglecting the rights and welfare of its tribal citizens in favor of political gains.

The incident has sparked a wave of criticism, with Sarma calling for greater accountability and justice for Hembram’s family amidst concerns over law enforcement practices in Jharkhand.
