Assam: Karimganj District Court Sentences Man to 10 Years for 2019 Acid Attack
Guwahati, August 17, 2024 —The Karimganj District Court has sentenced Samsul Haque to 10 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for his involvement in a 2019 acid attack case. The verdict was delivered by District and Sessions Judge Rouchan Ara Rahman, bringing closure to a legal process that spanned nearly four years.
The incident took place in Tilabari, Patharkandi, where Haque attacked Rukiya Begum under the pretense of purchasing a dog. The assault left the victim severely injured, leading to Haque’s prosecution and eventual conviction.
This verdict follows a similar case earlier this month in which Md. Abdul Jalil from Moritoli, Morigaon District, was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor. The sentence, handed down by Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge (POCSO) N. A. Ahmed on August 1, was under Section 376AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Jalil was also fined Rs 20,000, with an additional six months of imprisonment in case of non-payment. Charges under Section 366 IPC were dropped.
These recent rulings highlight the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to ensure justice for victims of heinous crimes in Assam.
