Manipur Medical Community Stages Protest Over Kolkata Doctor’s Murder

Northeast Desk, August 17, 2024 — The medical community in Manipur joined the nationwide protest on Saturday, staging a sit-in to express solidarity with the doctors’ strike against the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

For a full day, outpatient departments (OPD), inpatient departments (IPD), operating theatres (OT), and diagnostic services were suspended across the state. Emergency services continued to function, ensuring critical care remained available.

Dr. Khundongbam Palin, MD of Shija Hospital and President of the Association of HealthCare Providers (India) – Manipur Chapter (AHPI), condemned the inhumane act and called for justice for the victim. “The entire medical fraternity of Manipur strongly denounces this heinous crime and stands united in demanding justice,” Dr. Palin stated.

Around 36 healthcare centers and hospitals participated in the protest, organized by AHPI and the Indian Medical Association-Manipur State Branch. Protestors displayed placards with slogans such as “Safety for Doctors, Safety for All,” “Stand with the Medical Fraternity, Stand for Women’s Safety,” and “Stop Violence Against Women.”

The protest highlights the medical community’s urgent call for increased protection and justice for healthcare professionals following the tragic incident.
