Pratima Bhoumik Demands Resignation of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Over Safety Concerns
Northeast, August 18, 2024 — Former Union Minister of Tripura, Pratima Bhoumik, called for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation on August 18, citing severe concerns about women’s safety in the state. Bhoumik, a senior BJP leader, accused Banerjee of running a government akin to Taliban rule, asserting that the recent incident involving the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor at R G Kar Medical College highlights systemic failures.
In a press conference, Bhoumik condemned the state government’s handling of the case, alleging that similar violent incidents have become routine under Banerjee’s leadership. She criticized Banerjee for not addressing the issue effectively and claimed that the West Bengal government attempted to cover up the incident by initially labeling it a suicide. Bhoumik stated that the post-mortem report revealed over 100 injury marks on the victim, further underlining the brutality of the crime.
Bhoumik also accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of undermining democracy, alleging that TMC goons have been attacking protestors, destroying evidence, and threatening those who speak out. She criticized Banerjee for her inaction and claimed that the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home and Health Minister portfolios, has only staged protests instead of implementing concrete measures.
The BJP leader called for Banerjee’s resignation, arguing that her continued presence in power jeopardizes women’s safety and undermines freedom of speech in West Bengal.
