Family Accuses GMCH of Negligence Following Fatal Accident; Doctors Report Assault Amid Rising Tensions

Tensions erupted at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) after the tragic death of Salgira Agitok Sangma, a young man brought in following a severe road accident. Sangma’s family has accused the hospital of negligence, claiming that he was left unattended for an extended period, leading to his death.

Sangma, found unconscious after the accident, was rushed to GMCH by Noonmati Police. Despite his critical condition, the family alleges that no immediate medical attention was provided, resulting in his demise.

In a related development, GMCH’s Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent reported an assault on three on-duty doctors by individuals accompanying the patient. A formal complaint, dated August 19, 2024, was submitted to Bhangagarh Police Station, detailing the physical assault on Dr. Dibyendu Chakravarty, Dr. Mahbub Hassan Akon, and Dr. Akash Singh from the Surgery Department. The hospital has called for swift action against those involved in the attack.

This incident at GMCH comes at a time when doctors nationwide are protesting for stronger protections following the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. Despite a Bill being drafted in 2019 in response to earlier protests, it has yet to be presented in Parliament, leaving healthcare workers increasingly vulnerable.
