ULFA-I Issues Ultimatum to BJP Leader Over FIR Against Bir Lachit Sena Leader
The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has issued a stark ultimatum to BJP leader Gaurav Somani, demanding the immediate withdrawal of a complaint lodged against Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha. The complaint, filed at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati, accuses Chaliha of inciting enmity based on language and race, potentially threatening Assam’s peace and harmony.
In a press statement released on August 19, ULFA-I warned of severe consequences if the FIR is not retracted. The group has implied that failure to comply could lead to a “grave situation” in the state, placing the onus for any ensuing unrest on the Assam Police. They also suggested that the broader non-Assamese community in the state might face adverse repercussions due to Somani’s actions.
Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh has condemned the recent bomb threats issued by the militant outfit as attempts to disrupt state progress. Singh assured that the Assam Police are committed to maintaining law and order and will investigate the threats thoroughly. He emphasized that while the state has made significant strides in development, some elements are trying to derail this progress through violent acts.
On August 15, ULFA-I claimed responsibility for planting bombs at 25 locations across Assam, intending to detonate them on Independence Day. However, technical issues prevented the explosions. The Assam Police have since recovered the explosives and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident.
Singh urged the youth not to be swayed by the outlawed group and reassured the public of the police’s dedication to upholding peace and security.
