Assam Police Headquarters Issues Directive for Lawful Policing Amid Communal Tensions
Guwahati, 22nd August: In a decisive move to uphold law and order, the Assam Police Headquarters has issued a comprehensive directive to all police units across the state, emphasizing the critical importance of adhering strictly to legal procedures. This order, conveyed by Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh, comes in response to recent incidents involving criminal acts with victims and accused from different communities.
The directive underlines the necessity for the police to operate “in absolute accordance with law,” especially in sensitive cases where communal tensions may be involved. To foster harmony, district police units have been instructed to hold regular meetings with Thana Level Nagrik Committees and the District Administration. These meetings are intended to bring together stakeholders from all communities, aiming to “maintain amity” and prevent the escalation of conflicts.
The order strongly cautions against any form of vigilante justice, stating unequivocally that “there should be no space for resort to instant justice or action beyond law by any section of people.” It further mandates that field police units must “ensure the rule of law under all circumstances,” warning that any failure to comply will be “viewed adversely and dealt accordingly.”
Reinforcing this directive, DGP GP Singh took to Twitter, reiterating the commitment of the Assam Police to lawful conduct. He urged all stakeholders to cooperate in maintaining law and order in the state, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to break the law.
This directive is part of the Assam Police’s ongoing efforts to promote communal harmony and ensure that policing practices across the state remain fair, just, and within the bounds of the law.
