Tripura Floods: State Announces Educational Closure as Torrential Rain Disrupts Services
Northeast Desk, 22nd August: The severe flooding in Tripura, triggered by relentless rainfall since August 19, has wreaked havoc across the state, disrupting communication systems and forcing the closure of all educational institutions.
The deluge has displaced over 34,000 people, with around 10 reported fatalities. Water levels in major rivers continue to rise, exacerbating the crisis. In response, the state government has announced the closure of all educational institutions—including government, government-aided, and private schools, colleges, and state-run universities—until further notice. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Education portfolio, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the need for safety during this ongoing emergency.
The floodwaters have also inundated Tripura’s largest crematorium, adding to the state’s mounting challenges. Major transportation routes are severely affected, with interstate bus services halted and landslides reported across the state. The Chandrapur Interstate Bus Terminus, the largest in Tripura, has suspended operations to and from other northeastern states, leaving many stranded.
In response to the escalating situation, the government has deployed five Tripura Civil Service officials to manage the distribution of relief materials. Heavy rainfall has triggered landslides at over 1,900 locations, causing extensive road blockages and complicating rescue efforts.
Today, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha chaired an emergency review meeting at the Secretariat in Agartala, alongside the Chief Secretary and other officials. The meeting focused on strategies to rescue stranded individuals and ensure the efficient delivery of aid to flood-affected areas.
