Tripura CM Manik Saha Oversees Emergency Response Amid Devastating Floods in Gomati District
Northeast Desk, 23rd August: Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that essential food items are being air-dropped to the most affected areas in Tripura’s Gomati district as the state grapples with severe flooding. The operation, which utilizes MI-17 helicopters, is aimed at providing relief to the distressed residents of Amarpur and Karbook, where the ongoing floods have left many in desperate need.
The state administration is closely monitoring the situation, and alongside the air drops, extensive rescue efforts are being carried out to evacuate stranded individuals and deliver critical healthcare services. “Our government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every citizen. We are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to manage the situation and support those in need,” said Chief Minister Saha.
Earlier on August 22, Saha visited a shelter at B. R. Ambedkar School in Bordowali to assess the ongoing relief efforts, reassuring displaced residents of the government’s commitment to providing necessary support.
The relentless floods have claimed 19 lives, with seven fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. Over 65,000 people have been rendered homeless, and two remain missing, according to the *Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Department. The disaster was triggered by persistent heavy rainfall, with Tripura recording substantial downpours, particularly in South Tripura’s Bogafa (493.6 mm), Sepahijala’s Sonamura (293.4 mm), West Tripura’s Agartala (233 mm), and Gomati’s Udaipur (155 mm).
Rivers across six districts—Dhalai, Khowai, South Tripura, West Tripura, North Tripura, and Unakoti—have surged past danger levels, exacerbating the crisis. Landslides have been reported in 2,032 locations, with ongoing efforts to clear and restore affected areas.
