Assam CM Condemns Brutal Gang Rape of 14-Year-Old in Nagaon
Guwahati, 23rd August: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, Nagaon district, calling it a “crime against humanity” that has deeply disturbed the state. The brutal attack, which occurred on the evening of August 23, has led to widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Sarma took to social media to express his abhorrence, stating, “The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience. We will NOT SPARE anyone & BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE.”
In response to the crime, Sarma has directed the Director General of Police to visit the site and expedite action against those responsible.
Local residents discovered the victim in a semi-conscious state near a pond, where she had been left without clothing for about an hour. She was promptly taken to Dhing FRU for medical attention. Reports indicate that the girl was attacked while returning home from tuition classes.
The community’s response has been one of intense anger and demands for justice. Student unions, including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), and various civil society groups have called for a bandh in the region. The locals who rescued the girl are demanding that the perpetrators be apprehended within 12 hours.
This incident comes amid ongoing nationwide protests following the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to combat sexual violence.
