Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls for United Effort to Eradicate Rape, Emphasizes Collective Responsibility

Guwahati, August 25 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a powerful appeal for collective action against rape, denouncing it as a “grave violation of human dignity.” In a recent statement, Sarma emphasized that it is the shared responsibility of all citizens to work together to eliminate this heinous crime from society. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a safer and more just environment, particularly for women.

“Every single incident of rape must be unequivocally condemned, as it represents a grave violation of human dignity. It is our collective responsibility to work towards eliminating this heinous crime from society,” Chief Minister Sarma stated. “Let us unite to ensure that such atrocities find no place in our world and that safety, justice, and compassion prevail.”

Sarma’s call to action comes amid a review of rape cases in Assam spanning from 2001 to 2023. The data reveals fluctuating trends in the number of registered cases, with the highest figures recorded in 2019 at 3,546 cases, closely followed by 3,544 cases in 2017. However, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of cases since 2021. By 2023, the number had dropped significantly to 989 cases, and as of July 2024, 580 cases have been registered.

The Chief Minister’s appeal underscores the importance of a united front against sexual violence, urging all sections of society to join hands in the fight to protect human dignity and ensure justice for all. As Assam continues to make strides in reducing the incidence of rape, Sarma’s words serve as a reminder that the battle against such crimes requires unwavering commitment from everyone.
