Manipur: Kuki Organizations to Hold Rallies in New Delhi and Lamka, Demanding Union Territory Status for Kuki-Zo

Northeast Desk, 27th August: In a significant demonstration of dissent, various Kuki organizations will hold rallies at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and in Lamka, Manipur, on August 31, 2024, demanding the formation of a Union Territory with a Legislature for the Kuki-Zo community. Organized by the Kuki Inpi and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), the New Delhi rally is set to take place from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

The protest, according to organizers, is a direct response to what they describe as “institutionalized genocide” under the N. Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur. The demonstrators are calling for justice and the establishment of full autonomy through Union Territory status, which they argue is crucial for ensuring the rights and security of the Kuki-Zo people.

Simultaneously, another rally will be held in Lamka, Manipur, jointly organized by the Zomi Students’ Federation and the Kuki Students’ Organisation. Both rallies aim to bring national attention to the ongoing crisis in Manipur, urging immediate intervention from the central government.

The Kuki-Zo community’s demand for a Union Territory stems from growing concerns over their safety and autonomy amidst the escalating tensions in the region. The rallies are expected to draw significant participation, highlighting the community’s determination to secure a more stable and self-governed future.
