RG Kar Medical College Returns to Normal Amid Protests and CBI Investigation
National Desk, 27th August: Following days of unrest over the assault and murder of a trainee doctor, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is resuming normal operations. Patient numbers have surged from approximately 100 to over 1,000, according to Medical Superintendent Saptarshi Chatterjee.
Chatterjee informed ANI, “Every day we engage with students and faculty to ensure patient care remains uninterrupted. RG Kar is gradually returning to normal, with all departments, including OPD and Emergency, now fully operational. Better days are ahead.”
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been active at the hospital, seizing documents and hard drives for their probe. “The CBI team has taken all necessary items, and I have verified my signature on all documents at the CGO complex,” Chatterjee added.
Security measures have been heightened around the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, in anticipation of the Nabanna Abhijan Rally organized by Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj and other groups. The protest demands justice for the murdered trainee doctor and has led to the deployment of vajra vehicles, water cannons, and Riot Control Force by the West Bengal Police. Roadblocks have been set up to prevent potential unrest.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the RG Kar Medical College seminar hall on August 9, leading to nationwide outrage and ongoing demands for justice. The police have deemed the upcoming rally “illegal,” asserting that it aims to provoke broader disturbances in Kolkata.
