Assam Assembly Session: BJP MLA Alleges Coercion of TET Teachers

Guwahati, 29th August: In a heated Assam Assembly session, BJP MLA Ramakanta Deori raised serious allegations about the safety and security of TET teachers in his constituency. Deori claimed that Assamese Hindu TET teachers in the Lahorighat area are being coerced into marrying Muslims due to threats. Some teachers, he asserted, are complying out of fear.

The opposition, including Congress and AIUDF, strongly condemned Deori’s remarks and demanded a magisterial inquiry into the matter. The MLA also highlighted that women TET teachers in the nearby Morigaon district continue to face threats.

In response to staffing issues in education, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced in June 2024 a plan to create 35,000 new teacher vacancies under the Shiksha Abhiyan. This initiative aims to allow contractual SSA teachers to apply for these positions, with the intention of dissolving corresponding contractual posts once the new positions are filled.
