Controversy Erupts Over Assam Repealing Bill: Opposition Challenges Proposal to Repeal Muslim Marriages Act
Guwahati, 29th August: A significant controversy has erupted following the tabling of the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024 by the state government on Thursday, August 29. The bill proposes the repeal of the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935, sparking strong objections from opposition members.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has voiced robust dissent against the bill. He raised concerns about its implications, stating, “We have demanded the removal of the term ‘repeal’ from the bill.” Dr. Islam questioned the state government’s authority to regulate Muslim marriage practices, emphasizing that personal laws already govern these matters.
Criticizing the move, Dr. Islam suggested that the Chief Minister’s agenda appears to target a specific community, potentially infringing on their rights as protected by existing personal laws. He warned that if the bill passes in its current form, the AIUDF is prepared to pursue judicial intervention to safeguard the affected community’s rights.
The bill’s discussion is scheduled for today, with lawmakers set to debate its impact and the broader implications for Assam’s Muslim population.
