Tripura Declared Natural Calamity Affected Area Following Catastrophic Flooding
Northeast Desk, 29th August: The Tripura government has officially designated the entire state as a “Natural Calamity Affected Area” after devastating floods resulted in 31 fatalities and approximately Rs 15,000 crore in damages. The declaration came after an emergency meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary on August 24, 2024.
The Tripura Disaster Management Authority (TDMA) announced the decision in response to what officials described as “unprecedented floods” that have severely impacted both public and private infrastructure. Secretary of Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management, Brijesh Pandey, provided details on the crisis, noting that in addition to the fatalities, two individuals were injured and one remains missing.
The floods have caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, raising concerns about long-term economic repercussions. The designation as a natural calamity zone is anticipated to facilitate relief efforts and access additional resources for recovery and reconstruction.
As rescue operations continue, state authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and adhere to evacuation orders. This disaster underscores the growing vulnerability of northeastern India to extreme weather events and highlights the need for enhanced climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness in the region.
