Assam: Student Arrested for Social Media Post Deemed Offensive to Hindu Community
Guwahati, August 30, 2024 — A 20-year-old undergraduate student, Sanidul Haque, was taken into custody by the Barpeta Police on Thursday evening in connection with a controversial social media post. The post, which appeared on Facebook, contained an image and comments that were widely considered to be derogatory towards Lord Shree Ram, a revered figure in Hinduism.
Following multiple complaints from various Hindu organizations and student groups, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, the authorities took swift action. The Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, GP Singh, instructed the local police to arrest Haque, who is currently enrolled in the Assamese Department at Madhab Choudhury College.
The incident has sparked heated debate and calls for further action, with some students at Madhab Choudhury College demanding Haque’s expulsion. The college administration is yet to comment on the matter. The arrest highlights the challenges of balancing free speech with religious sensitivities in a diverse society.
