Manipur Police Arrest Two Individuals for Extortion Activities in Separate Incidents

Northeast Desk, 1st September: In a crackdown on extortion activities, Manipur Police arrested two individuals in separate operations on August 31 in Bishnupur District.

In the first incident, Chabungbam Bishworjit Singh (28) was apprehended for extorting money from vehicles on Old Cachar Road. Singh was found to be illegally collecting money under the guise of a ‘ULF Entry Tax.’ During the arrest, police recovered a challan booklet used by Singh to demand money from the public. The booklet indicated a charge of Rs 500 for four-wheelers and light heavy vehicles, and Rs 2,000 for heavy vehicles.

In another operation on the same day, Manipur Police arrested an active cadre of UPPK, a faction of the insurgent group PREPAK, from Thamnapokpi in Bishnupur District. The individual, identified as Nameirakpam Ningthou Meitei (42), was involved in extortion and monetary demands from the public. The police seized three mobile handsets, Rs 10,000 in cash, and a four-wheeler vehicle from his possession.

These arrests reflect the ongoing efforts by Manipur Police to combat extortion and illegal activities in the region.
