Meghalaya Resolves Only 91 Crimes Against Women Cases in Five Years, Reveals Social Welfare Minister

Northeast Desk, 1st September: Meghalaya’s Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh has disclosed that only 91 cases of crimes against women have been resolved over the past five years, spanning from 2020 to 2024. The minister shared this information during a reply tabled in the recently concluded Assembly session.

Breaking down the numbers, Lyngdoh stated that 18 cases were resolved in 2020-2021, 19 in 2021-2022, 25 in 2022-2023, and 20 during 2023-2024. So far in 2024, only 9 cases have been resolved.

Minister Lyngdoh emphasized that cases at the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) are not closed permanently. Instead, they remain open-ended, allowing for re-examination whenever necessary. This approach aims to ensure continuous attention to unresolved issues concerning crimes against women.

The MSCW currently operates with 8 members, including the chairperson, vice-chairperson, four members, a co-opted member, and a member secretary. The tenure of the present chairperson commenced on July 1, 2024, and is set for three years.

In its effort to combat crimes against women, the MSCW has conducted a total of 49 awareness programs over the last six years, highlighting the commission’s ongoing commitment to addressing gender-based violence and supporting victims across the state.
