Assam: Inflammatory Posters Spark Tensions in Chirang

Guwahati, September 3, 2024 Tensions have risen in Assam’s Chirang district following the discovery of communal posters containing inflammatory messages. The posters, which read, “Assamese domination won’t be tolerated. Long live Miya. Down with Hindus,” were found plastered on the doors of shops in Vhetagaon, Bijni, late on the night of September 2.

The posters, reportedly put up by an unidentified group, contained anti-Assamese and anti-Hindu statements and threatened unrest if perceived oppression against the Miya community continued. The inflammatory content has heightened fears of communal unrest among local residents.

In response, Bijni police promptly confiscated the posters and have launched an investigation into the matter. Local MLA Ajay Kumar Roy and Chirang district Trinamool Congress President Anirban Sen have both visited the site, calling for immediate police action to apprehend those responsible for the provocative posters.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they work to ensure peace and prevent further escalation in the area.
