Nagaland: Heavy Rainfall Triggers Devastation in Chumoukedima District, One Dead, Several Missing
Northeast Desk, 4th September: One person has died, and several others are missing after torrential rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides, causing extensive damage to houses and major sections of National Highway-29 in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district. The incident occurred late Tuesday night at Pherima, where roadside houses were severely damaged by the sudden surge of water.
The Chumoukedima district administration is currently assessing the extent of the damage, while search and rescue operations have been launched to locate the missing individuals. The deluge also completely washed away a crucial portion of NH-29, which connects the state capital, Kohima, with the commercial hub of Dimapur, severely disrupting transportation and communication.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed deep concern over the large-scale destruction caused by the incessant rainfall. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he assured that the state government is in active discussions with the Central Government to expedite relief and rescue efforts. “Authorities are on-site assessing the situation & helping those affected. The State Govt will continue to pursue with the GoI & @NHIDCL for immediate measures & restore normalcy at the earliest,” Rio stated.
Deputy Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang also expressed his sorrow over the calamity, which has led to loss of life and property. He emphasized that search and rescue operations are ongoing and urged everyone to pray for the safety of those still missing.
