Manipur Protests Government Inaction Amidst Ongoing Drone Attacks
Northeast Desk, 6th September: A human chain protest was organized today across various parts of the valley region in Manipur, condemning the perceived inaction of both central and state governments following recent drone attacks. The protest, led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), voiced strong criticisms of government responses and the ongoing violence.
Protesters chanted slogans demanding the withdrawal of central forces if they fail to act and denounced the Indian government’s stance towards Manipur. They called for Kuki militants who have used drone bombings to be designated as terrorist groups, labeling the drone attacks as acts of terrorism.
One protester criticized both state and central governments for their failure to restore peace, describing the state government’s handling of the crisis as ineffective. The protester pointed out the recent drone bombings in Koutruk and Kadangband under Imphal West, which occurred on consecutive days, as evidence of the escalating violence.
In a related incident, suspected militants carried out a bomb attack in Bishnupur district on September 6, damaging at least two structures. Rockets were fired from elevated positions in Churachandpur district towards Tronglaobi, located around 45 km from Imphal. The rockets, with an estimated range of over 3 km, caused damage to a local community hall and an empty room, but no injuries were reported.
The protests and attacks highlight the escalating tensions and challenges faced by the region, with demands for more decisive action from the authorities to address the ongoing violence and instability.
