Meghalaya Government Fines 1,788 Vehicles for Tinted Glass Violations, Collects Rs 13.35 Lakh

Northeast Desk, 7th September: The Meghalaya government has fined 1,788 vehicles for the use of tinted glass, collecting Rs 13.35 lakh in penalties by the first week of September. The crackdown, initiated in July, is part of a sustained drive to enforce the Supreme Court’s directives on vehicle safety.

East Khasi Hills District Police Chief Sylvester Nongtnger informed reporters that the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has been conducting regular checks to ensure compliance with the ban on black films. The Supreme Court of India has prohibited the use of any percentage of Visual Light Transmission (VLT) on vehicle safety glasses, windscreens, and side windows.

As part of the enforcement, the black films were removed from the vehicles following the imposition of fines. Of the 1,788 vehicles caught in violation, 30 were government vehicles.

Nongtnger emphasized that the STP will continue its efforts to eliminate the use of tinted glasses, urging vehicle owners to comply with the law. He clarified that only ministers and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are permitted to use tinted glass on official vehicles, while Members of District Councils (MDCs) and corporation chairpersons are not entitled to the same exemption.

The ongoing drive reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring road safety and adherence to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
