Assam CM Announces New Developmental Era Following MoU with Singapore for Urban Transformation

Guwahati, 8th September: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the beginning of a “new developmental dawn” for Assam following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Singapore, where a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and the Government of Assam.

The MoU, aimed at transforming urban planning and management in Guwahati, seeks to integrate Singapore’s best practices into Assam’s infrastructure development. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the “future-focused collaboration” that promises to enhance the city’s infrastructure and planning, positioning Guwahati for sustainable growth.

The joint statement issued by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Lawrence Wong highlighted the ongoing India-Singapore partnership, building on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) established in 2005 and its reviews in 2007 and 2018. Both leaders expressed optimism about the swift conclusion of the Third Review of CECA, ensuring its relevance to the evolving economic landscapes of both nations.

In addition, the statement called for a revision of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) by 2025 to foster a more trade-friendly environment. It also underscored the significant investment opportunities for Singapore in India, particularly in smart city projects and urban infrastructure, with SCE playing a key role in these initiatives.
