Manipur IG (Operation) Denies Ethnic Bias Claims and Addresses Student Protests

Northeast Desk, 10th September: Manipur’s Inspector General of Police (Operation) IK Muivah has firmly refuted allegations of ethnic bias within the state police force. In a recent press briefing, IG Muivah dismissed claims made by a retired senior officer suggesting the existence of divisions within the police along ethnic lines, such as Metei and Kuki police forces. He emphasized that the Manipur police are composed of members from various communities, including mainland residents, Kukis, Nagas, and Meteis, labeling the statements as unfounded and immature.

Addressing concerns related to the recent drone bombing incidents, IG Muivah reaffirmed that the police’s official statements on the matter remain accurate and transparent. He assured the public that the state police are committed to clarity and truth in their communications.

In light of the ongoing student protests, which began on September 9 at Manipur’s Ima Market, IG Muivah called for non-violence. He urged students to avoid violent actions to prevent further complications. The protests, driven by demands made to Governor Lakshman Acharya, saw students issuing a 24-hour deadline, which ended without a resolution. Security personnel dispersed protesters after some began throwing stones, leading the students to relocate their protest site to Ima Market for the night.

Muivah also pointed out that vested interest groups might be instigating unrest and that the police are actively monitoring social media to manage misinformation and maintain order. The students have indicated plans for a more intensified form of protest if their demands are not addressed promptly by the Governor.
