Manipur Colleges to Remain Closed Amid Ongoing Protests and Curfew
Northeast Desk, 10th September: The Higher and Technical Education Department of Manipur has issued a directive for all government, aided, and private colleges in the state to remain closed on September 11 and September 12, 2024. This decision follows a previous announcement made on September 8, 2024, and has been sanctioned by the competent authority.
The closure coincides with a curfew imposed in Imphal East and Imphal West districts due to the prevailing law and order situation. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Ngarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, have restricted movement outside residences from September 1, 2024, until further notice. A relaxation of the curfew previously granted from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM on September 10, 2024, has been lifted effective from 11:00 AM on the same day.
The current unrest began with students protesting at Manipur’s Ima Market since September 9, demanding a response from Governor Lakshman Acharya to their charter of demands within 24 hours. As the deadline approaches, students have shifted their protests to Ima Market after being dispersed from the Raj Bhawan following stone-pelting incidents.
The students have announced plans for more intense agitation if their demands are not met by the 1 PM deadline today. In response, state and central forces have been deployed to secure the area, and strict security measures are in place to manage the situation.
