Tensions Persist in Manipur Following Student Clashes with Security Forces
Northeast Desk, 11th September: The situation in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, remained tense but under control on Wednesday after a violent clash between students and security forces during a protest march to Raj Bhavan the previous day, according to police. A curfew, imposed on Tuesday afternoon, is still in effect as additional security forces have been deployed, and frequent patrolling is being conducted to prevent further incidents.
The unrest began when students attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan to demand the removal of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and security advisor. Security forces responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd after students allegedly pelted stones at them in the Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas. The clashes resulted in more than 55 students being injured and admitted to RIMS hospital, according to student organizations.
On Tuesday night, the government issued an order limiting the suspension of internet services to five valley districts in response to the growing agitation.
In a related development, a student delegation met with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum of their demands. The governor assured the students that he would take steps in the best interest of both the students and the people of Manipur.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that search operations were being conducted in Kangpokpi district, leading to the recovery of arms and explosives. The state remains on high alert to prevent further escalations.
