Meghalaya Government to Promote Village-Level Landfill Sites Amid Land Scarcity
Northeast Desk, 11th September: The Meghalaya government has unveiled a new initiative to encourage villages to establish their own landfill sites within their jurisdictions, as announced by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. This move addresses the pressing issue of land scarcity for new landfills in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.
Deputy Chief Minister Dhar disclosed that he will organize a meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Block Development Officers (BDOs) by the end of September to discuss this initiative. He highlighted that some villages, such as Wahiajer in West Jaintia Hills district, have already set up their own landfill sites, and this model will be encouraged for other villages, particularly those with larger populations.
Additionally, Dhar announced a meeting on Thursday to review proposals for land acquisition to establish new landfills across the state. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, local communities, and organizations to ensure the effective implementation of these landfill projects.
Dhar assured that the new landfills will adopt scientific waste management methods, contrasting with older, less effective dumping practices. He emphasized that these landfills will be equipped with proper fencing and advanced technologies to minimize environmental impact. A public hearing will be conducted once the plans are finalized to ensure that nearby areas are not adversely affected.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed the government’s commitment to creating landfills with a minimum lifespan of 50 years, reflecting the administration’s dedication to sustainable and effective waste management solutions.
