Nagaland Government Bars ‘Gau Mahasabha’ Event, Citing Protection of Naga Customs and Public Order
Northeast Desk, 12th September: In a move to preserve the state’s unique cultural and religious identity, the Nagaland government has denied permission for the ‘Gau Mahasabha’ (mega meeting for cows) scheduled for September 28 in Kohima. The event, to be presided over by Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, Swami Avimukteshvaranand Saraswati, faced opposition from various quarters, including civil society organizations and political parties.
The Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, cited the protection afforded by Article 371A of the Constitution, which safeguards the religious and social practices of the Nagas, as well as Naga customary law and procedure. The government spokesperson, Minister C L John, emphasized that the decision was made in the interest of maintaining public order.
The proposed event had sparked concerns among the Christian-majority population, where beef is a staple part of the cuisine. The Naga Mothers’ Association and Naga Students’ Federation, among others, had voiced their opposition, while the state BJP president, Benjamin Yepthomi, clarified that the party had no involvement with the event, emphasizing the need to respect Nagaland’s socio-religious and cultural fabric.
