Assam Cabinet Approves Major Reforms, Including Case Withdrawals and Infrastructure Development

Guwahati, September 14, 2024 – The Assam cabinet, in a series of landmark decisions, has approved key reforms aimed at alleviating pressure on the state’s judicial and prison systems, boosting industrial development, and expanding welfare programs. One of the notable decisions is the amendment of the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the withdrawal of petty and minor cases in subordinate courts. This move is expected to fast-track serious cases and help decongest jails by releasing undertrial prisoners. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the withdrawal of 81,000 petty cases will be completed by March 2024.

Additionally, the council of ministers has greenlit the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in aerospace, defence, automotive, and electric vehicle industries in collaboration with Dassault Systems Private Ltd. The French company will invest Rs 200 crore, while the Assam government will contribute Rs 40 crore. The initiative, which includes training programs for 3,000 engineering graduates, aims to boost innovation and employment in cutting-edge sectors like robotics, artificial intelligence, and defence technology.

In an effort to address energy shortages, the cabinet also approved the procurement of 100 MW of wind-solar hybrid power from NTPC. This strategic move is expected to mitigate power supply shortfalls, particularly during peak evening and night hours.

The government further announced a special recruitment drive to regularize 4,669 contractual teachers across the state, providing job security and strengthening the education sector. On the welfare front, 1,26,000 new beneficiaries will be included under the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme across 126 constituencies, and 17 lakh new ration cards will be distributed starting September 19.

Rounding off the session, the cabinet also approved a Rs 362 crore project to revamp the Assam State Zoo, marking a significant investment in tourism and wildlife conservation. These wide-ranging reforms are expected to propel Assam’s development across multiple sectors, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability.
