Tripura Minister Challenges Congress MLA Over Corruption Allegations, Threatens Legal Action
Northeast Desk, 15th September: Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has issued a two-day ultimatum to Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman to prove the corruption charges leveled against him. Debbarma stated that if the allegations are proven true, he would resign from politics. This came after Roy Barman, a seven-time legislator, accused Debbarma and his family of amassing substantial properties through corrupt practices during a recent state assembly session.
Roy Barman alleged that the minister had acquired properties including land in Agartala, a petrol pump in Khowai district, and a flat in Delhi through illegal means. However, Debbarma strongly rejected the accusations, clarifying that his family’s wealth was earned legitimately, with both his parents having held government jobs and himself being a government-approved contractor since 1989.
At a press conference, Debbarma declared his intention to file a defamation case against Roy Barman for what he called “false corruption charges.” In response, the Congress MLA stood firm, welcoming the legal challenge and asserting that his claims were based on reality. Roy Barman has called for the immediate removal of Debbarma from his ministerial post, accusing him of attempting to safeguard his political position amid corruption allegations.
Debbarma, meanwhile, maintained that the accusations were baseless and aimed at damaging his political career. “I will quit politics if he could prove the corruption allegations,” he reiterated, challenging the Congress MLA to back up his claims.
