Assam: Encroachers Evicted from Sonapur Arrive in Mayong, Raising Concerns Among Locals
Guwahati, 16th September: Hundreds of encroachers, evicted from Sonapur, Assam, arrived in Mayong, sparking concern among local residents. Throughout the night, scores of vehicles carrying the evictees and their belongings continued to enter Mayong, leading to suspicions about their intentions.
Some locals attempted to question the encroachers, who explained that they were passing through the village to reach the Char areas via the Brahmaputra River. According to one resident, the evictees claimed they were originally from the Char areas and had been forced to leave Sonapur after a recent eviction.
The situation drew attention from locals, who expressed concern about whether the encroachers would attempt to settle in Mayong. One local noted that the evictees were not landless and had faced similar evictions in the past. “The authorities need a sustainable solution. These people are being evicted repeatedly, which only leads to temporary resettlements without addressing the root cause,” a local said.
The officer-in-charge of Mayong Police Station visited the area to assess the situation and urged locals to report any further influx of vehicles. However, India Today NE was unable to get a response from the officer regarding the developments.
The encroachers had been evicted earlier in the day from Kachutali in Sonapur, where a major eviction drive, initiated by the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration, dismantled unauthorized structures on government land. The operation, which began on September 9, was conducted under heavy security with the assistance of police and paramilitary forces.
The evictees, many using household vehicles laden with belongings, were seen leaving the area after the eviction, moving towards alternative locations in search of resettlement.
