BRO Restores Vital Road Connectivity to China Border in Sikkim with New Bailey Bridge

Northeast Desk, 18th September: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully constructed a new bailey bridge at Zeema in Mangan district, Sikkim, restoring crucial road connectivity to the China border via the Lachen Valley, according to an official release.

The original bailey bridge, vital for the region, was damaged in flash floods in the Lachen Chu river on May 29, 2023. The damage had significantly disrupted transportation and logistics, affecting both local residents and the armed forces stationed near the China border.

Under Project Swastik, BRO workers commenced the construction of the new bridge on August 24, and it was completed in less than a month, with operations concluding on September 16. The swift completion has been hailed as a major achievement.

The new bridge is not only critical for the logistical support of the armed forces but also for local communities who rely on it for essential transport. Furthermore, it is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism in North Sikkim by reconnecting the Gurdongmarg Lake, a major tourist attraction that had been cut off since October last year.

This development is expected to facilitate smoother transportation and enhance the region’s overall connectivity.
