Arunachal Pradesh Shines in Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Championships
Northeast Desk, 19th September: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has lauded the state’s bodybuilding and weightlifting teams for their impressive performances in recent regional and international competitions. At the 1st North East Body Building & Physique Championship 2024 in Sikkim, Taluk Param, Taba Nilo, and Katan Neri each secured Silver medals in the men’s bodybuilding category, while Nabam Muna took home a Bronze.
In a major international triumph, Balo Yalam clinched a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Suva, Fiji, competing in the 59 kg body weight category. Yalam lifted a combined total of 181 kg, showcasing her remarkable strength with 81 kg in the snatch and 100 kg in the clean and jerk.
Bengia Tani, another rising star from Arunachal, claimed a Silver medal in the junior 67 kg category at the same event. Tani lifted 118 kg in the snatch and 156 kg in the clean and jerk, building on his earlier success at the 37th National Games in Goa, where he won a Bronze.
Yalam, Tani, and fellow athlete Shankar Lapung have been selected to represent India at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship 2024 in Manila this November. Additionally, Lapung will compete in the IWF Junior Weightlifting Championships in Spain later that month, further highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s growing presence in the global weightlifting arena.
