Tourism Flourishing in Tripura: Significant Growth and Development Projects Underway
Northeast Desk, 19th September: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that the state’s tourism sector has witnessed significant growth, owing to the concerted efforts of the government. Speaking at a program in Dhalai, he revealed that 5.45 lakh tourists visited Tripura in 2023-24, including 4.70 lakh domestic tourists and 75,000 from foreign countries. This increase highlights the growing popularity of the northeastern state as a tourist destination.
Saha also shared that the state has secured a Rs 180 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for further development of tourism infrastructure. Key projects include the enhancement of the Tripureswari Temple in Gomati district, one of the ‘Shakti Peeths’, which is nearing completion.
To attract younger visitors, adventure tourism has been introduced in Dumbur (Dhalai district), Chhabimura (Gomati district), and Jampui Hills (North district). Additionally, the renovation of Pushpabanta Palace, also known as Kunjaban Palace, is underway. Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, the palace served as the Raj Bhavan of Tripura until 2018. Saha expressed optimism about its future, suggesting that it could be transformed into a five-star hotel to further boost tourism.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the introduction of a light and sound show at Ujjayanta Palace, which showcases the rich history of the Manikya dynasty. Ujjayanta Palace, originally built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901, is now a state museum located in the heart of Agartala, offering visitors a glimpse into Tripura’s royal heritage.
Saha emphasized the need to develop tourism sustainably while preserving the traditions and contributions of the Manikya dynasty. “Tourism will flourish if we develop it properly,” he said, underscoring the state’s commitment to becoming a prominent destination for tourists.
