Meghalaya’s Food Processing Sector Earns National Praise at World Food India 2024

Northeast Desk, 22nd September: Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Chirag Paswan, lauded Meghalaya’s advancements in the food processing sector during his visit to the state’s pavilion at World Food India 2024. Held at Pragati Maidan, the event showcased innovative initiatives aimed at bolstering Meghalaya’s food industry and rural economy.

Expressing admiration for the state’s strides in organic cultivation and food processing, Paswan assured the central government’s unwavering support for Meghalaya’s continued growth in the sector. “The way Meghalaya is progressing, especially in food processing, is commendable. We stand ready to fully support the state government in its initiatives,” Paswan affirmed.

The minister was particularly impressed by the Meghalaya Collectives, a program aimed at promoting Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPOs), rural entrepreneurship, and sustainable agricultural practices. This initiative focuses on empowering rural communities through market linkages and enhancing agricultural productivity.

The state’s pavilion featured 21 food processing brands and FPOs, highlighting value-added products derived from local specialties like Lakadong Turmeric, Khasi Mandarin, and Kew Pineapple. These products drew significant attention for their quality and potential to boost farmers’ incomes.

Gunanka DB, Joint Secretary of Meghalaya’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, accompanied the minister on his tour of the pavilion. The showcase underscored the state’s commitment to improving farmers’ livelihoods through innovative agricultural practices and value addition, earning widespread interest from attendees.

Meghalaya’s presence at World Food India 2024 not only spotlighted the region’s unique agricultural products but also underscored the significant potential for expansion within the state’s food processing industry, offering promising prospects for future growth.
