Assam: Suspected Cylinder Blast Sparks Major Fire in Guwahati’s Sarumotoria, Shops Destroyed

Guwahati, September 23: A major fire erupted in the Sarumotoria area of Guwahati on Sunday, following a suspected cylinder explosion, leading to extensive damage to multiple shops. Goods worth several lakhs were reduced to ashes, though no injuries were reported in the incident.

According to local sources, the extreme heat in the area might have triggered the cylinder blast, which set off a chain reaction, causing the fire to spread rapidly. Within minutes, several nearby shops were engulfed in flames, raising concerns over the fire safety protocols in place.

Eyewitnesses reported that despite alerting the fire department early on, the response was delayed, allowing the fire to escalate. “The fire tenders arrived late, by which time the damage was already done,” said a local shopkeeper. However, once on the scene, multiple fire brigades managed to contain the blaze despite several explosions continuing in the affected area.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and assess the full extent of the damage caused to local businesses. Further details are awaited as the area remains under investigation.
