Assam: Unrest Erupts at Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji Over Alleged Political Interference
Guwahati, September 23: Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji in Dhubri is at the center of unrest within the local Sikh community following allegations of interference by influential figures. Bhupinder Pal Singh (Kiki), owner of Assam Tent House, and Parminder Singh Manchanda, President of Manipur Shiv Sena, are accused of attempting to destabilize the Sikh Pratinidhi Board Eastern Zone, which oversees Sikh affairs in Northeast India.
Interim Board President Sardar Bhagel Singh highlighted that these individuals, with strong political connections, have disrupted preparations for the upcoming Sahidi Purab in December. Tensions escalated during a key Board meeting on September 22, where community members reported police harassment, including vehicle checks and detentions. A licensed revolver belonging to Sardar Gurbhej Singh was also confiscated.
Adding to the controversy, former Board President Sardar Daljit Singh Sethi filed a false FIR alleging manhandling during the meeting, despite the Board possessing video evidence contradicting this claim.
In response to the escalating conflict, the Sikh community plans to file FIRs against Singh and Manchanda across various districts in Assam. The Board is urging Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees (GPCs) to rally local MLAs and MPs for action. Support from the All Assam Sikh Youth Association and Meghalaya Sikh Youth Association has been mobilized to strengthen their legal efforts.
This conflict has unsettled the local Sikh population, who are determined to protect the integrity of their institutions and ensure the successful organization of the Sahidi Purab.
