HNLC Accuses Meghalaya Police of Political Targeting Ahead of MDC Elections

Northeast Desk, 23th September: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned militant group in Meghalaya, has accused the state police of deliberately tarnishing the image of Sromwell Mawdoh, who was recently arrested for alleged involvement in extortion activities.

HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw rejected the police’s claim that Mawdoh confessed to being the group’s treasurer, demanding evidence to support the accusation. Nongtraw suggested the arrest was politically motivated, as Mawdoh had expressed interest in contesting the upcoming Meghalaya Democratic Coalition (MDC) elections.

Nongtraw also criticized the police for targeting young individuals under the guise of law enforcement, alleging a broader pattern of manipulation, including past incidents where police officials controlled media narratives to serve their own agenda.
